Karlsruhe mit Barbara

So tief im Süden konnte ich nicht an Karlsruhe, Barbaras Heimatstadt, vorbei. Auch Olivier konnte sich von seinen Hausarbeiten losreißen. Wir hatten fröhliche Stunden im Café Emaille. Sehr empfehlenswert.

Being in the south of Germany I could not pass-by Karlsruhe, Barbara's hometown. Also Oliver could break away from his studies. We spent happy hours in Café Emaille. I cna highly recommend it.

Colmar

 Colmar ist ein kleines Städtchen in Frankreich. Weil Freiburg so nah an der Grenze liegt konnten wir einfach mit dem Bus hinüber fahren.

Colmar is a little town in France. Because Freiburg is so close to the border we just took the bus to drive over.

 Wir haben klassische französische Quiche genossen. Und natürlich haben wir echtes Baguette und Käse mit nach Hause genommen. Très bien!

We ate original french quiche. And we did bring back French baguette and cheese. Très bien!

In diesem alten Kloster konnte man die beeindruckenden Werke mittelalterlicher Künstler bewundern. Ich glaube, das hat mir in den USA doch etwas gefehlt - alte geschichtsträchtige Gebäude, wo man das Gefühl hat, die Geschichte einatmen zu können.

This old cloister was an exibithion of old medieval art. I think this is one thing I missed in the US: Old buildings full of history where you can almost breathe in all the things that happend over the centuries.

Freiburg

 Meghan aus Ashland bereist mit ihrer Familie gerade Europa. Als Endstation war sie noch ein paar Tage bei Leni (andere Austauschstudentin aus Deutschland) in Freiburg zu Besuch. Matt "gefällt" das.

Meghan from Ashland is traveling Europe with here family. At the end she stayed some days with Leni (exchange student from Germany) in Freiburg. Matt "likes" it.

 Freiburg liegt im ganz südwestlichsten Zipfel von Deutschland. Eine der wärmsten und ertragreichsten Gegenden Deutschlands.
Diese kleinen Kanäle sind überall in der Stadt. Der Tradition zufolge muss jedes Mädchen, das aus Versehen in einen Kanal tritt, einen Freiburger heiraten.

Freiburg is located in the far south-west of Germany. One of the warmest and high-yielding areas of Germany.
Those little canals are all over the city. It is a tradition that every girl that accidently steps into one of those canals has to marry a man from Freiburg.

 Auf den Turm des Münsters kann man steigen, wenn man viele, viele Treppen nicht scheut.

You can climb the tower of the Münster but be prepared for many many stairs.

 Auch Deutsche sind nicht perfekt. Mit Freude finden wir jedes falschgeschriebene Deutsche Wort im Ausland. Jetzt ist uns selbst mal ein Fehler passiert. Upps.

Also Germans are not perfect. Usually it is us complaining about every misspelled German word when we go somewhere. This time we made a mistake ourselves. Oops.

This blue bridge is next to the main station. In summer it a wonderful place to meet friends and enjoy the evening.

End of journey - end of blog?

Ist das das Ende meiner Reise und auch das Ende meines Blogs? Nicht unbedingt. Ich bin jetzt auf den Geschmack gekommen und reise auch in Deutschland herum. In Zukunft werde ich hier also von meinen kleinen und großen Reisen berichten - sicherlich in größeren Abständen. Bis bald

Is that the end of the journey and also the end of the blog? Not necessarily. I like traveling and going on adventures even in Germany. So from now on you will read about my little and big adventures in Germany - not as frequently though. See you soon!

Goodbyes

 Am 12. Juli ging mein Flug zurück nach Deutschland. Viel packen, viele Abschiede. Am meisten habe ich mich über Walters Geschenk gefreut. Er hat mir ein Gedicht und Bilder in mein "Calvin and Hobbes"-Buch gemalt und einen Abschiedsbrief geschrieben. Ich werde dich so vermissen.

I had to leave for Germany (for good) on 12th of July. Lots of packing and lots of goodbyes. I was very moved by Walters goodbye present. He wrote a poem and draw some pictures into my Calvin and Hobbes book. And he wrote a farewell-letter. I will miss you so much!

 Am Tag meiner Abreise gab es zum letzten Mal eine Essensschlacht mit Schlagsahne. Nanci, was werde ich ohne dich machen?

On the day of mu departure we had our last foodfight with whipped cream. Nanci, what will I do without you?

Zwei Säcke mit Kleidern musste ich zurück lassen. Das war nicht gerade leicht. Aber ich habe noch genug Klamotten in Deutschland. Dafür konnte ich meine Ukulele mitnehmen.

I had to leave behind 2 bags of clothes. That was not easy for me. But I have tons of clothes in Germany - so no tears. Instead I did bring my Ukulele to Germany.

Zeit mit Walter - time with Walter

 In den letzen Tagen vor der Abfahrt habe ich noch so viel Zeit wie möglich mit Walter verbracht. Das "Scienceworks" Museum ist wie das Spectrum Museum in Berlin - viele Experimente.

In the last days I wanted to spent as much time as possible with Walter.
The Scienceworks Museum in Ashland is just mind-blowing.

 Worüber er wohl nachdenkt? Bestimmt denkt er sich wieder ein paar Streiche aus.

What is he thinking about. Probably planning more pranks.

 Leicht wie eine Feder ...

Würmermutprobe: Wenn er mehr als 10 davon isst, bekommt er ein Geschenk. Das Beweisvideo ist bei mir. Er hat wirklich Würmer gegessen.

Trial of courage: If he eats more than 10 worms he can have a gift. Well, I have a video that proofs that he indeed ate worms.

Spaß mit Reifen - inner tubing

 Dieser "Reifen" hat Platz für 3 Leute. Wie man sieht ist das Lächeln von allen dreien etwas gequält. Danke Michelle und Nate.

 John war der talentierte Fahrer des Bootes. Er hat es geschafft auf einem ziemlich stillen See 2m hohe Wellen zu produzieren.

John was our very talented driverof the boat. He produced 6ft high waves on a calm quiet lake.

 Ich halte mich besser auf dem "Biscuit". Man liegt nur drauf und hält sich fest, bis man keine Kraft mehr hat. Kayla mochte den "Donut" lieber. Man kann bequem drinsitzen.

I liked the tubes called "biscuit" but you have to hold on for your dear life. Kayla prefered the "Donut" which is pretty comfortable.

 Man kann ein bisschen lenken und versucht den Partner von seinem Reifen zu schupsen. Ist schon ein bisschen gefährlich. Man kann schnell einen Fuß ins Gesicht bekommen.

The aim is to get your partner from his tube. It is a little bit dangerous. Watch out for his feet though or you will loose some theeth.

 Bis einer reinfällt. Das Wasser war so schön warm. Am nächsten Tag hab ich große blaue Flecken am ganzen Körper gefunden.

Until somebody falls into the water. On the next day I found lots of big bruises all over my body.
